As another year has begun, we know the excitement is in the air about making New Year’s resolutions and all of the things we want to accomplish in our lives. This is the time we are excited about starting a new workout program to get in shape like we said we would do last New Year.
As ministers and leaders it is vital that we take our health seriously. The Bible talks about our bodies being the temple of the Lord’s, that these bodies are not our own but belong to God and on the day of judgment we will have to give an account for the way we treated our temples.
When it comes to our health, we have to make a quality decision to make it important in our lives. I have said it before and I will say it again, there are things the Lord may want you to do but because of your health you cannot accomplish what He has for you. When it comes to weight loss, you have to look at it as a lifestyle, because when you just see it as weight loss it can come back very quickly. The key is to make small changes and set realistic goals. For example, if you have dessert 5 days a week, set a goal to have it 3 times a week, then eventually reduce it once a week. If you only walk once a week, make a decision to walk 3 times a week and so on and so forth. It’s just like the Bible says, you have to renew your mind concerning your health. You don’t go from kindergarten to the 12th grade in a week so why do you think there is a short cut to your health. Let me let you in on a little tip…THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS! The media has done a good job on selling this point that weight loss can happen very quickly. For some people maybe it can but for most of us that is not the case. Companies will pay a lot of money for advertising to sell a product or better yet a mindset to take your money and give you a false sense of achievement in a short period of time.
I am from the school of thought that if you eat healthy and exercise not only will you lose weight but you will become healthy. Even if you do not need to lose weight, we still have to be healthy, so we have energy and stamina to do what God has called us to do.
In closing, I would like to encourage you to make that decision to the road of health. If you have made the conscious decision…congratulations, keep going! I look forward to the upcoming year and sharing with you the things that will help you along the way. Just remember to stay encouraged and don’t get disappointed if things don’t go as fast as you would like for them to. The foods that our parents ate are a lot different from the foods we eat today. We eat so much processed food and the fruits and vegetables we eat are not as nutritionally sound as they used to be. These two things impact our ability to lose weight in an efficient way. We will discuss these things and other subjects this year. As always, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
